Sage (Salvia officinalis) is a culinary herb which traditionally derives from the Mediterranean region, but is now cultivated in Albania, Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Sage has been used for hundreds of years and Ancient Egyptians used it as a fertility drug (Bown, 1995).
In the first century C.E. Greek physician Dioscorides reported that sage could stop the bleeding of wounds and cleaned ulcers and sores. He also suggested sage juice in warm water for hoarseness and cough. Pliny the Elder (ca. 23-79 C.E.) also reported that sage enhanced memory functions.
Sage is commonly used during the menopause, as it may help antipespiring properties.
