Sage (Salvia officinalis) has been used for hundreds of years both as a culinary and therapeutic herb. Sage is stated to process carminative, antispasmodic, antiseptic, astringent and antihydrotic properties. The key constiuents are organic acids, polyphenols, terpenes and volatile oils. Whthin the volatile oils, rosmarinic acid and carvacrol wuold appear to exert antioxidant properties. Several other compounds are reported to have anti-flammatory or anticholinesterase properties (effectively preventing the destruction of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine by the enzyme acetylcholinesterase within the nervous system).

Interest is also growing relating to the role of sage in brain health with studies showing improvements in cognitive function in certain population groups with the use of sage.

A 2002 study on hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating) showed that sage is capable fo reducing such symptoms. Interestingly, sage has traditionally been used extensively for the relief of the sweating associated with menopause.
